Our driver took Guest through an ancient reservoir and we saw pretty villages and rice paddies.The sacred Kulen mountain is the birthplace of the Angkorian era.You can only go up the mountain between 8 and 12 and then it's open to travel down.The river contains holy water and is crystal clear making it easy to see the Thousand Lingas carved into the river bed.The river sits at the base of Wat Preah Ang Thom which is an ancient temple. We had to remove our shoes before the final ascent to the temple.
We saw here many monks and local people which added to the atmosphere. Many people go here to see the giant reclining Buddha only a certain amount at a time as it is very busy. Down we went and on down many steps to a waterfall where you could swim.People had been advised to wear modest clothing but sadly many stripped off to their underwear,a shame when it is such a holy mountain for the local people.So expect a place that is very busy but beautiful.
The mountain: This is a very sacred place. You can pay a few cents to have holy water poured over a Shiva linga and you wash your face and head with sacred water. Enjoy some refreshing fresh cut fruit for a few cents. Buy honey collected from the mountain bees. Buy 'mountain bananas' from the vendors on the road up or down the mountain. Don't give them candy or money handouts was my Cambodian man's advice.
River and waterfalls: The carvings on the river bed are amazing. The site is very sacred and special. The water flows over the carvings and is considered holy water. The waterfalls are pretty but the reason people go is to swim in the blessed water. 'Rent a room' for 50 cents to change your clothes at the waterfall. Rent an inner tube to float around. Watch local children with their machetes as they play on the rocks. But watch out for snakes if you think about sitting on the riverbank away from the crowds.We transfer between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and other parts of under Your Request us.
